The adorable Fu Zai made headlines in early 2024 when he became the first-ever Corgi to enter police dog training in China; he is possibly the first in the world! After months of rigorous training, Fu Zai, whose name translates to “Lucky Boy,” made his professional debut in October as an explosives detection expert, having surpassed many of his fellow canine pupils during training. His short legs make him uniquely adapted to working in smaller spaces with limited headroom, and his cheeky smile has endeared him to people around the world.

Despite his meteoric rise to fame and professional success, Fu Zai’s career trajectory hit a rocky patch during his recent performance review, which was shared by the Weifang Public Security Bureau on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok.

After receiving a largely positive report, during which he was commended for his impressive achievements such as passing his Level 4 Police Dog assessment and boosting the public profile of Weifang’s police canine unit, he was awarded a hamper containing dog food, treats, toys, and a red rosette. However, things took a turn when Fu Zai’s recent indiscretions were brought to light.

Troubling reports of this hardworking Corgi urinating in his water bowl were difficult enough, but the most devastating blow was learning that he had fallen asleep on the job. Upon learning of his misdemeanors, the reviewing officer rescinded the food and toys, leaving the humiliated Fu Zai with only the red rosette to mark his achievements.

Unsurprisingly, this has sparked a wave of protests, both from locals and Fu Zai fans across the globe, with comments sections blowing up with comments like:

“He deserves the bonus plus 100% salary increase!”

“Nooo he deserves double bonus!”

“We ride at dawn for Fu Zai!”

You can tell that this pint-sized police dog has become a beloved member of the Weifang Public Security Bureau and a favorite amongst fans. We can only hope that he will use this time to reflect on his shortcomings and rise above in the year ahead – pun intended!
